The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) consists mainly of indigenous Muslims who have been struggling poverty traditionally.

In addition, they have been struggling against the partiality of successive governments. Actually, we cannot lay the blame specifically on the government or the Moros. The main problem that both sides can fairly blame is the poverty of the nation.

The leadership on either side can quote many authentic arguments.

However, the Moro groups in spite of their popularity and vast following have reached an understanding. They realize that it is not in their people’s interest to prolong the decades old rebellion.

Furthermore, the long drawn out struggle is alienating their people from the mainstream Filipinos. Consequently, their people are losing out on the benefits that other regions and ethnic groups are enjoying.

Therefore, their people as well as their regions are losing out in the final outcome.

Under this realization, the Moros are wiser due to the futility of fighting the government. It is a fruitless struggle for nothing.

Hence, Muslim militants all over the world are turning against the more violent groups like the Islamic State. The approach of the modern Islamists is more practical now than ever before.

Consequently, the murderous ways of the violent extremists are inviting fatwas against the senseless violence. The uprising of the other Gulf States against Qatar and Al Jazeera is a case in point.

In the Filipino context, the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) wielded the brand of ruthless violence similar to the Islamic State. The Maute too joined the bandwagon in the attack on Marawi.

But, it turned out to be a case of gross miscalculation by the Islamic State and others. The Muslims will throng to fill up their ranks and allow them to establish a solid foothold in the Philippines.

But, the reaction of the local Islamists was far from favorable. After the initial euphoria, the tough stand of the government dissuaded the masses who were heading to join IS.

In addition, the foreign nationality of a majority of attackers irked the local groups like MILF, MNLF and others. These groups are the ones who command a sizeable share of following locally. If Islamic State developed roots here, they would lose their following.

Furthermore, these marauders might turn on them sooner or later. In addition, due to their peace accords, the IS would project them as pro-government. Branding as pro-government is the last thing that a rebel group needs.

On May 23rd, when they attacked Marawi, Islamic State stood to gain dominance as the top rebel group. But, they didn’t realize that Duterte waited for just this chance.

MILF being the largest local Moro group was likely to lose big. But, this was the reason why the surrounded militants approached them. Al Haji Murad Ebrahim of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front got the chance he wanted.
He did not broker the safe withdrawal of the alien extremists thus killing two birds with one stone.

He refused to intervene.

His reasoning for the refusal was that President Duterte had declared that he would not negotiate with terrorists. His interfering would have been interference in his affairs.

Moreover, the nation is under attack from outsiders who are merciless towards our countrymen.
He also informed that there was intense infighting between the trapped militant groups.

They conveyed to the religious leaders that, in the absence of negotiations, they were preparing for fighting until death.
