Infecting millions in the Americas
The WHO representative, Ubial also mentioned that it was still not a stage where we can call it an epidemic. Considering that 150 people were tested and only 8 turned out to be positive. That translated into just 8% of the total number of people that got tested for manifesting the symptoms of Zika.
On behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) she made a fervent appeal to the general public. She asked them to get rid of place that could have the potential of breeding mosquitoes.
Since it is a dangerous disease that is detected recently, the local government is trying its best not to allow it to spread. A concerted campaign is underway with vast areas being subjected to fogging operations by the local governments particularly in areas where there is a lot of vegetation and water that is stagnant and likely to breed mosquitoes and their larva.
The density of adult mosquito population needs to be kept under check to curtail breeding. Even the affected communities and civic authorities had joined in to get rid of all such places that may breed mosquitoes.
The WHO representative and the Health Secretary stated that the time
had not yet come for a travel advisory to be issued. The situation was not so grave yet but, it will be infecting millions soon, if not checked.
However, it was prudent not to allow pregnant women to travel places like Iloilo where the risk was quite high. Right now, they mentioned, there was no cause for alarm since the disease is still not widespread though it is getting transmitted locally.
The health department gave instructions to all the 12 patients and their neighbors to apply mosquito repellent creams till one week at least.
Zika virus is spread by Aedes mosquitoes that are active during the daytime; e.g. A. albopictus and A. aegypti. The Zika forests being the place of detection of the virus.
Scientists discovered it in 1947.
It is quite similar to other forms of dangerous fevers, infecting millions, like:
1. West Nile Fever,
2. Yellow fever,
3. Yellow fever, and
The World Health Organization (WHO) is keeping a close watch and warns that it is spreading explosively in the Americas. It is the cause for severe birth defects in thousands of newborn babies in Brazil. As per the latest estimates, it is presumed that, at the rate of its spreading, it will be infecting millions in the Americas with almost half of them in Brazil.
In connection with this mosquito-borne disease, the Executive Board of the W.H.O, met recently. Its Director General Margaret Chan told them that what was a mild threat a few days ago has assumed alarming proportions.
The brains of many of the newborns in Brazil were affected by microcephaly to such an extent that their sight was also compromised to a large extent.
Because of the effect of Zika, some children have amazing reflexes ahead of their age but, experts opine that such symptoms are often misleading and do not reflect the true position of the ailment.
It leads to happiness for the parents who are misled to underestimate the brain damage caused due to microcephaly.
The opinion of the neurosurgeon who was the first one to raise an alarm about the Zika Virus being at work in Brazil, Dr Vanessa Van der Zlinden, such abnormal reflexes are only reflecting the havoc played by microcephaly with their developing brains.
In a meeting with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at Bethesday in Maryland, she pointed out that such abnormal behavior was not anything to be pleased about, it is not normal.
The accelerated responses are a function of the brain stem but they stop quite soon after birth; in such cases, the acceleration does not stop, it goes on causing abnormal behavior. The doctors and specialists on child health have to agree with her inferences because they are true.
The videos exhibited by her are sufficient proof of the veracity of her claims.
Every small action of the child like stiffening of limbs and their squalling is familiar to a pediatrician. It is a medical condition called Hypertonic which does not allow them to relax after each such stiffness.
Dr, Vanessa explains that this is the reason why some of these infected children keep crying for up to 24 hours in a day.
