But, the bonhomie soon gave way to more serious matters like the situation obtaining in the Korean Peninsula.

Hence, they expressed their collective concern at the way tensions are prevailing.

Hence, the joint statement said that it was threatening to disrupt the peace, stability and security of the region. Moreover, any confrontation here may have serious escalation throughout the world.

It was a matter of grave concern, the diplomats stated at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). The grave situation has become more worrisome since by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) refuses to toe the American line.

North Korea has been adamantly pursuing its provocative nuclear program with the United States threatening action.
Furthermore, it continues to test its Intercontinental Ballistic missiles (ICBMs). It also conducted two nuclear tests during 2016. In the process, its tests were quite close to the Japanese coast.

The foreign ministers also urged North Korea to comply with the United Nation Security Council Resolutions. Moreover, as a participant of the Asean Regional Forum (ARF), ASEAN asked DPRK to assist the forum to maintain everlasting peace in the region.

The ARF, is an annual security conference, and will be held in Manila on Monday. They supported the concept of DPRK equipped with nuclear weapons but reiterated that the facilities should be verifiable and transparent. Hence, the Foreign Ministers urged that all parties practice self restraint.

They were also in favor of a Unified Korea which would usher in peace in the Korean peninsula.
