Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, President of the Filipino Senate believes that people trust the judgment of the community of lawyers. Therefore, he wanted them to help the nation have solid faith in the judicial system of the Philippines.
This is possible if the lawyers themselves had that faith and projected it further. Consequently, Pimentel posed the challenge of restoration of this trust to the young lot.
He was speaking more as a senior lawyer than a lawmaker. Himself a topper of the judicial profession, he was bestowed an honorary Doctor of Law degree by the University of the Philippines.
Speaking on the ceremony after accepting the honor, he exhorted the fresh graduates to work towards restoration of public trust in the establishment.
In addition, he had received honoris causa in 2012 conferred by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). This ceremony of his alma mater took place on Monday.
Pimentel gave a call to the entire judicial community to unite and strive to restore the trust. Furthermore, the Senate President advised lawyers to function as solution providers rather than problem creators.
Among the many challenges during their careers, they must fight temptations of power and money with firm resolve. They have to strive to expedite the court cases so that the delays vanish.
Furthermore, the lawyers will have to be upright and refrain from taking bribe. You should not do it just because someone else is doing it. You should be true to the lawyers’ oath, he said.
He also pointed out that people suffer due to long drawn out and in case of erroneous judgments. Moreover, many people suffer a double whammy. It is a case where you get a faulty decision after a prolonged case.
Moreover, justice delayed is justice denied. This is one tool that deprives the poor from getting justice.
